The Attack on Pearl Harbor

December 5-12, 2012

 

 

   On this tour we will spend four days exploring sites including Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield, the site of the Opana Radar Station, the USS Missouri, and the National Cemetery at the Punchbowl.  On the morning of December 7th, we will attend the poignant ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial marking the 71st anniversary of the attack.  Participants may choose to take an optional scenic flight which will follow the flight pattern the Japanese Zeros flew over Oahu that fateful morning. The tour will end with two days on the Big Island of Hawaii where we will explore the eerie lava fields of Volcanoes National Park and several ancient Hawaiian sites.

ITINERARY

December  5    Check into our hotel in Honolulu for a five-night stay. Gather at tonight’s welcome reception and dinner. Overnight Outrigger Reef On The Beach, Waikiki (R,D)

 

December  6    On Oahu’s east coast we’ll visit the site of Bellows Air Force Station, an overlook to discuss Kanehoe Marine Corps Base, and the Opana Radar site. We’ve invited a Pearl Harbor survivor to join us for lunch this afternoon.  Continue to Wheeler Field and Schofield Barracks. Overnight Outrigger Reef On The Beach, Waikiki (B,L)

 

December  7 At dawn, attend the poignant commemorative ceremonies marking the 71st anniversary of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Proceed to Fort Shafter dubbed the “Pineapple Pentagon.”   Take an optional scenic flight that will follow the flight pattern of the Japanese zeros as they flew in over Oahu that fateful morning.

December  8    At the new USS Arizona Memorial visitor center, we’ll meet National Park Historian Danny Martinez who will give us a private presentation.  Following a film, we’ll board a boat to the actual Memorial. We’ll pay our respects on a visit to the American National Cemetery at the Punchbowl. O/N Outrigger Reef On The Beach, Waikiki (B,L)

 

December  9  This morning we’ll drive to Ford Island to visit the Pacific Aviation Museum and the USS Battleship Missouri.  Lunch at the tea house where Japanese agent Yoshikawa spied on Pearl Harbor; see the telescope he used to gather intelligence prior to the attack.

December  10 & 11 Fly to the Big Island of Hawaii and spend two nights at in Hilo. Visit several significant ancient Hawaiian sites and explore the natural wonders of Volcanoes National Park.  O/N Hilo Hawaiian Hotel (B,L,D  each day)
